1st Annual Maverick Festival

On March 23 I attended the first ever Maverick Festival in San Antonio. The festival was at La Villita and ended up being an all day affair. 6 hours of local bands that were free during the day light hours, and as the sun went down, those lucky enough to have tickets (yippe me!) continued to soak in the sounds, along with some amazing chalupas from local food stands.

The line-up consisted of:
 Maverick Stage
12-12:45 p.m. Elora & Gasoline Alley
2-2:45 p.m. The Heroine
4-4:45 p.m. T Bird & the Breaks
Juarez Stage
12:30-1:15 p.m. Trees
1:30-2:15 p.m. Este Vato
3-3:45 p.m. Hour Band
4:45-5:45 p.m. Villela
Maverick Stage
6:30-7 p.m. Arum Rae
7:15-7:45 p.m. Henry + the Invisibles
8-8:45 p.m. Girl in a Coma
9-10:15 p.m. The Toadies
10:30-11:45 p.m. Gary Clark Jr

After fighting the limited parking spots that there are downtown, I walked in just in time to get a good spot for Henry + the Invisibles. Henry calls San Antonio, New York and Austin his home. The stage was elbaorately decorated with guitars, keyboards, a computer, and a light drum set all under his sequined cloth. The way he moves and his facial expressions show how much he loves being up there. I couldn't hold back from dancing by myself and snapping my fingers while I ate my chalupa with a huge smile.

The sets changed very quickly, which was great because sometimes shows linger and linger, and no one wants to wait for great music! Girl in a Coma was the next set, who I have never seen live before have heard soooo much about them. They are a local ALL girl band, and these girls rock so hard. They have the look, the attitude, and the sounds that blend so perfectly together that they are nothing but a hit.

A long awaited performance came up next, and the crowd certainly showed their support when they came onto the stage. The Toadies are a four piece set that have a standing with those who love rock in San Antonio. The venue became packed and I was forced to move in between strangers I did not know, but that made it all the better. I felt like I was the youngest person to attend this festival, besides the two five year olds I saw playing tag. Maybe the Toadies were before my time because I did not know their music, but the men clearly have been rocking for generations, drawing crowds from all over.

I was incredibly dissapointed to have to miss Gary Clark Jr. who put the whole festival together, however I am sure after this great success of a Saturday he will soon return to the great city of San Antonio.

Dark Planes - KRTU Plugged In Session

released 24 January 2013
In the esteemed tradition of the Trashmen, the Stooges, and every other band of punks bashing out 3-chord at obscene volumes, Dark Planes have all too willingly filled a void in SA's scene for skuzzed-up garage rock. Though still roughly a year into playing together, the band has come far from their early noise-rock work-outs, which typically consisted of leader John Mata making up lyrics (and occasionally songs) on the spot, while his band-mates thrashed out whatever seemed to make sense behind. Their KRTU performance sees the band locking in to an impressive set of all original songs (save the last one), while still maintaining enough of the mayhem necessary to making this sound work.

Listen through the full session below, and tune in to the full Plugged In session w/ exclusive tracks and interview content with the band this Thursday at 10pm on Live and Local.

Dark Planes is:
John Mata - Vocals/Guitar

Third Root - Plugged In Session

It's been only a year or so since the duo of Easy-Lee Peters (of the Mojoe Family Band) and Mexican Stepgrandfather (also known in the hallways of UTSA as Dr. Marco Cervantes) formed Third Root, and dammit if they haven't been busy since. After the release of their acclaimed debut Stand For Something, the band immediately moved forward into new territory, sharpening their politically and culturally minded message. Our session catches the dynamic duo between releases, digging into some of Stand for Something's most choice material, and honing tracks from their soon to be released mixtape Mind Elevation.

Listen in to the full session below, and keep your calendar marked for the Plugged In Debut this Thursday at 10pm, along with the Mind Elevation Release Party, happening this Sunday.

The Last Nighters were led by Rob Fernandez, lead vocalist and guitar player. Providing synths, keys, and vocals was Niem Harris, which truly gave the band a more electronic sound. Meanwhile, Kendall Marryman handled solely guitar, and Jeremiah Morales brought powerful simultaneous drums and vocals. All these sounds were then beautifully complimented by Nick Federico, who provided bass and more vocals. Mike, a friend of the band, tagged along for some photography of the session.

Listen to all 8-tracks the band laid down during the session, and tune in Thursday Night at 10pm during Live & Local to catch the debut of the Last Nighters full Plugged In Session, including exclusive interview content with the band.

Trip the Light: Plugged In Session

After lugging his gear half-way across town (by bus and on foot no less), space case Anthony Burchell brought his Trip the Light project up to our studios to lay down a handful of tracks from his latest EP Galactic. Armed with only a lap-top, drum machine, and a Yamaha keyboard pulled straight from your elementary school music class, Burchell wasted no time in blasting into interstellar overdrive during his 5-song set.

We'll be debuting the full session w/ interviews with Anthony this Thursday at 10pm during Live & Local. For now, video of the session, some pics, and a handy Bandcamp EP of all the tracks we recorded, just in case you need a soundtrack for your next planetarium visit.

Deer Vibes: Plugged In Session

Deer Vibes describe themselves as experimental indie rock. They have added to this avant-garde sound by incorporating other instruments, such as brass and strings. Michael Carrillo aka Mikey Vibe is the brainchild of this hypnotic, sometimes 9-piece band. Deer Vibes came to Indie Overnight to lay down some old and new tracks with current (a word they use loosely) members Allison:Vocals, Stephen:Trumpet, Richelle:Trombone, Alex:Bass, Isaac:Guitar, Devin:Guitar, and Eddie:Drums.

Check out the debut of Deer Vibes' full Plugged In Session coming up this Thursday at 10pm during Live & Local w/ Kevin Sanchez. To hold you until then, get acquainted with these track highlights and videos shot during their in-studio performance.

No Future: Plugged In Session

Recorded: 3/8/12

The newly re-christened No Future (formerly Leatherbag) made a stop by Studio B to lay down a fistful of road-tested tracks, polished during their recent tour of dive bars and seedy honky-tonks across the south. Equal parts Nick Lowe and the Trashmen, Randy - guitar, vocals, Drew - bass, & Dan - drums thrashed though a set that included surf, punk, pop, and classic garage. They did their best to whip up enough racket to cause a noise ordinance violation, and in the process, we got some pretty stellar recordings. Listen through some of the individual tracks below, download the whole Bandcamp session, and be sure to listen out for the debut of No Future's Plugged-In Session this Thursday at 10pm on Live & Local.

Plugged-In Session: Buttercup

Recorded: 3/5/12

Emerging after a nearly year-long slow down in activity, the boys of Buttercup--Erik Sanden, Joe Reyes, and Odie--graced our studios for several hours to record a handful of tracks from their massive back-catalog and chat about everything from Wayne Coyne to their feelings on Minnesota. Listen through 8 of those tracks below, all utilizing the band's newfound power trio acoustic format, and check out the full Plugged-In session featuring interview content Thursday night at 10pm.

Plugged In Session: The Texas Weather

The Texas Weather, a San Antionio band with a very hard name to google, is part local folk musician Merykid and part Polysmith Fusion (aka Mike Randolph). With Merykid on guitar and Randolph on the theramin, The Texas Weather packs a pych-folk punch that sounds quite unlike anything else on the San Antonio music scene.

Tune in this Thursday night at 10pm to hear our Plugged-In Session with The Texas Weather!

Local Music Week: What it is and what we're doing

In case you're not aware, Local 782 will be putting on Local Music Week 2012 from April 1st through April 7th. What is Local Music Week, you ask? Well...

Local Music Week was created by Local 782 as a part of Local Media Month, which is every April. Local Media Month was established by Media Justice League, a parent organization to Local 782, to bring attention to community-made media. LMW somewhat serves as a local music campaign. The goal of this campaign is to reach people who don’t normally come out to local shows (which could be you, dear reader), making them aware of San Antonio’s growing and diverse live music community. Local 782's goal is to bring some media attention to the music community as a whole.

We here at KRTU admire Local 782's efforts to promote local music, and so we wanted to do a bit of promotion ourselves in conjunction with Local Music Week. Starting on Friday, March 30th and ending April 5th we'll be broadcasting live acoustic concerts from local musicians. Here's the line up so far:

Friday, March 30th - Pop Pistol
Saturday, March 31st - Jasper's Cast
Sunday, April 1st- 3 Legged Horse
Monday, April 2nd- Mission Complete (subject to change)
Tuesday, April 3rd- Nick Mery
Wednesday, April 4th- Ledaswan
Thursday, April 5th- Studio B Broadcast w/ Chris Maddin, Bad Breaks, Nicolette Good & more.

As you can see, our last broadcast will be special. We're bringing upping the ante for this last performance: we've added multiple musicians, and they'll be playing an electric set in our Studio B space for an special VIP audience.

Want to tune in but you're unfamiliar with the bands? Never fear! Literally almost all of these bands have footage from their Plugged-In Session on this blog. Just search for their name from the list on the right of this page!

So, now you know the deets about Local Music Week, and what Indie Overnight is doing to participate. Be sure to tune in starting March 30th to hear our exclusive in-booth concerts, and keep your eyes open from April 1st to April 7th for a great influx of live shows from local musicians at San Antonio venues!

Thanks to Local782's website for providing information on Local Music Week. Their official write-up can be found here: http://local782.org/localmusicweek

Plugged-In Session: Piñata Protest

Late last year, San Antonio's Latin punk rock group Piñata Protest graced us with their presence for a Plugged-In session.

Piñata Protest has cleverly coined the term “punk rock-y-roll" to describe their sound. The San Antonio Current has claimed them to be “one of the most original forces on the local music scene.” The sound of their accordion has been likened to the what the bagpipes have done for the Dropkick Murphys. The bagpipes of the Dropkick Murphys is fitting to Boston's Irish culture in the same way the accordion in Piñata Protest wraps something quintessentially San Antionian into their punk rock sound.

The group features Alavaro del Norte on vocals and accordion, JJ Martinez on drum and vocals, Matt Cazares on guitar, and Marcus Carares on bass.

See below to experience Piñata Protest's unique sound:

Henry + the Invisibles

Recorded 8/22/2010

SA's own one-man phunk band dropped by the KRTU studios to lay down some tracks from his latest EP. Henry and the Invisibles creates his unique sound through a complex web of live loops of his voice, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, percussion and other random objects such as coffee cans, chairs and water jugs. The end result: this one-man band sounds like a 5-piece funk band!

Track Listing:
1. Yo Future
2. Power of Ten

Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows Plugged-In Session

Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows was started some time in 2006 by, you might be able to guess this yourself, Marcus Rubio. Last week we aired the Plugged-In session for Rubio's latest project, Ominous Omnibus. Well, if you liked that sound, here's where you can explor it's beginnings. Even before The Gospel Choir of Pillows project, Rubio had been active in the San Antonio music scene-- playing shows at his local neighborhood swimming pool when he was 13, and eventually joining forces with Bedland Records producer Joe Reyes to release two LPs, My Head Blew Up (And Turned Into The Sky) in 2005 and Rhapsody in Plaid in 2006. Then, The Gospel Choir of Pillows released it's first LP, The Life of Pillows, in 2007, which was followed by the conceptual album Oceanic Tremors in 2008.

Rubio cites "String, Horn, and Woodwind Arrangments, Minimalism, Chromaticism, Ligeti, Latin/Tropical Grooves, certain amounts of twang, Will Oldham, David Grubbs, Jandek, unabashed noise, POWERelectronics, all things featuring the words "Jim O'Rourke", Underground Rap, Paul Simon, Calypso, Power-Pop" as musical influences for this project. As can be expected, such a motley group of influences yields a diverse and interesting sound for The Gospel Choir of Pillows.

HERE you can find the audio for our Plugged-In Session with Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows. Enjoy!
