Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows Plugged-In Session

Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows was started some time in 2006 by, you might be able to guess this yourself, Marcus Rubio. Last week we aired the Plugged-In session for Rubio's latest project, Ominous Omnibus. Well, if you liked that sound, here's where you can explor it's beginnings. Even before The Gospel Choir of Pillows project, Rubio had been active in the San Antonio music scene-- playing shows at his local neighborhood swimming pool when he was 13, and eventually joining forces with Bedland Records producer Joe Reyes to release two LPs, My Head Blew Up (And Turned Into The Sky) in 2005 and Rhapsody in Plaid in 2006. Then, The Gospel Choir of Pillows released it's first LP, The Life of Pillows, in 2007, which was followed by the conceptual album Oceanic Tremors in 2008.

Rubio cites "String, Horn, and Woodwind Arrangments, Minimalism, Chromaticism, Ligeti, Latin/Tropical Grooves, certain amounts of twang, Will Oldham, David Grubbs, Jandek, unabashed noise, POWERelectronics, all things featuring the words "Jim O'Rourke", Underground Rap, Paul Simon, Calypso, Power-Pop" as musical influences for this project. As can be expected, such a motley group of influences yields a diverse and interesting sound for The Gospel Choir of Pillows.

HERE you can find the audio for our Plugged-In Session with Marcus Rubio and the Gospel Choir of Pillows. Enjoy!
