The most fun fun funest fest ever

This past weekend, the KRTU Indie Overnight Crew went down to Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest.
I appreciate Fun Fun Fun Fest for a lot of reasons:
  • Everyone is chill.
  • I like the three crowds of people the fest attracts: you've got your punks/hardcore kids at the black stage, your blue stagers, a mix between electronica-obsessed chillwave bros and hip-hop aficionados, and your sensitive orange stager hipsters. It's cool to see these groups all together, and it's also fun to see for which bands there is an overlap between the crowds.
  • It's the perfect size, I honestly hope it doesn't get much bigger than it is.
  • The double stage set up is pretty great, for the most part. I appreciate the practically zero wait time between bands.
  • Lots of unique food vendors!
  • They hand out little programs with the schedule, jokes, activities and blurbs on each band. Perfect for down time between acts!
We were granted media passes from the fest overlords and got to spend some time in the media tent getting bumps from artists. I think YACHT was the nicest by far.

In addition to being nice in-person, YACHT also killed it live. They are a group of natural performers. I've seen plenty bands who do the same kind of color-coded-synchronized-movements performance, but YACHT does something different with it. I appreciate it when you can tell that a band is having a blast performing for you, it makes the show so much more enjoyable when you feel that your presence at their show is what the members of the band are living for. You definitely feel like you're on their level, like they couldn't do what they do with out you. Listen to me... maybe this is why people think YACHT is a cult. They definitely make you feel like you're a part of something.

M83 put on a good show, too. Their music seems more serious when performed live. They pump up the bass so that the music, and I hesitate to say this as someone who doesn't "get" dubstep, has a club/house music feel that makes the songs darker yet dancable.

The best finale of the fest went to Girls, in my mind. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed their entire set, but their last song gave me chills. They had three fabulous, soulful back-up singers, and at the end the band just let one of them let loose, she was so good she gave me chills.

We hope to have some photos up soon, and look for blog posts from Indie music manager, Ryan Kilpatrick and Jazz music manager, Matt Stieb!
