Dirty Projectors @ Emo's East

Hearing Dirty Projectors live in comparison to their recordings is like seeing a picture of the Grand Canyon versus blasting off into it in a '66 Thunderbird Thelma & Louise style -  it just can't be translated.

Even without longtime collaborator Angel Deradoorian (on hiatus for Swing Lo Magellan), Longstreth and the girls hit their harmonies with ridiculous precision and gave the crowd at Emo's East the vocal equivalent of a face-melting. On Useful Chamber, the band bent the song masterfully, slowing it down like a finger on vinyl, all while the girls belt their rich, antagonistic arrangements on top. Cuts from the vocal driven Mount Wittenburg Orca (2010) now seem stale in comparison to their live counterparts.

On stage, Longstreth looks like the dinosaur from Jurassic Park that killed Newman - skinny, long and with angular, jagged movements. I guess it matches his unique approach to the guitar, ripe with weird licks and unpredictable song structures.

And a quick shout-out to Emo's East - good choice of putting the newer, larger venue in what must have been a strip mall bowling alley. Sound sounds good and the Evel Knievel murals on the wall look sick.
